HENRY MINTZBERG TURNS THE LEADERSHIP INDUSTRY ON ITS HEAD
Henry Mintzberg stands out among Canadian business school academics. The Desautels Faculty of Management of Ï㽶ÊÓƵ professor, right, didn't mince words in his book Managers, Not MBAs, criticizing management schools for entertaining the conceit that the inexperienced could be made into corporate leaders through an MBA.
He flips that idea on its head, and argues that leadership is "management practiced well." That is, learn to manage effectively and people will seek you out. Chapter 5 of Managing-- "The inescapable conundrums of managing" -- should be read by MBA students and others considering an MBA. Managing is a quick read, but the substance is thoughtful and lasting.
