Student Affairs Liaisons for Muslim and Jewish Students

Initiative against Islamophobia and Antisemitism (IAIAS)

On March 21, 2022, Provost and Vice Principal (Academic) Christopher Manfredi announced the creation of an initiative to address and prevent Islamophobia and Antisemitism on our campuses.

This initiative was created in response to a growing number of reports from students and staff of Muslim and Jewish identity of experiences that have led them to feel marginalized, alienated, and/or discriminated within the University context.

The IAIAS was led by Professors Angela Campbell, Associate Provost (Equity and Academic Policies) and Fabrice Labeau, Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning). After a series of consultations with students, staff, faculty, and the wider community, the final report of McGill’s Initiative against Islamophobia and Antisemitism IAIAS was published in June 2022.

Professors Campbell and Labeau confirmed that Muslim and Jewish community members both feel that there is widespread misunderstanding of their cultures, histories, experiences, and identities, as well as what constitutes discriminatory behaviour against them. Furthermore, many Muslim and Jewish community members feel unsafe in their identities at McGill and worry about being targeted in the University context.
