Many service-oriented businesses suffered during the pandemic, but it was a boon for Paper, an online tutoring company. Led by Philip Cutler (BEd鈥13) and Roberto Cipriani (BSc鈥08), the company was a finalist in the 2014 Dobson Cup, an annual start-up competition that fosters entrepreneurship and gives cash awards to the best budding businesses. Today, Paper counts more than 450 staff, and over 2,200 tutors.

The Faculty of Science Excellence Awards recognize outstanding performance and contributions made by members of the Faculty鈥檚 administrative and support staff classified in four categories: Academic Associate, Clerical, Management, and Technical. The committee, comprised of staff members from each department, received nominations for three of these categories.

For International Women's Day last week,听Poets and Quants听spoke with a number of female business school graduates who have successfully started their own enterprises.听Aur茅lie H茅louis听(MBA鈥16), Founder and CEO of infinityQ, a quantum analog computing start-up, shared how her time at Desautels helped her discover how to apply the skills she acquired as a former senior officer and CTO in the French Navy to her entrepreneurial endeavours and develop her own business.

McGill alumni Philip Cutler (BEd鈥13) and Roberto Cipriani (BSc鈥08) recently raised $270 million in Series D funding to combat academic inequity across the U.S. In 2014, their K-12 tutoring company, Paper, made it to the final round of the McGill听Dobson Cup, and their reach has only grown since then. Serving more than two million students across 30 states, Paper鈥檚 mission is to offer flexible academic support to ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
Congratulations to the five recipients of the 42nd Desautels Management Achievement Awards, including three accomplished alumni: Meagan Prins (BCom鈥17), Maria Eitel (BA鈥84), and Monika Ille (EMBA鈥20) as well as听Patrick Odier and Brian J. Porter. During the virtual celebration earlier this month, Desautels students had the opportunity to network with the recipients and hear their words of advice.

Professor Karl Moore sits down with Dick Pound (BCom鈥62) to discuss the politics and athleticism behind the Olympic Games. A former Olympian and a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1978, Pound says audiences should focus on celebrating exceptional athletes rather than the drama of political boycotts.
Thanks to alumnus David Laidley (BCom鈥67), the Desautels Faculty of Management will soon unveil a Laidley Centre for Business Ethics. Endowed by Laidley鈥檚 gift of $5 million, the Centre will carve out a space for McGill researchers across disciplines to advance ethics in the workplace through academic programming, leading-edge research, and public engagement. The Centre will also have a focus on equity, diversity and inclusion.听
Tony Guglielmin (BA鈥82, MBA鈥84) praises Desautels鈥 diverse, forward-thinking environment for helping propel him to success in business. Midway through her doctoral thesis research at McGill, Anita Nowak (BCom鈥97, PhD鈥11) discovered a deep passion for supporting social and environmental innovators. With the encouragement of former faculty member Dr. Michael Hoechsmann, she zeroed in on empathy as the driving force for entrepreneurial success and developed a 鈥淧edagogy of Empathic听Action.鈥 This early research continues to inform her work as a global expert in empathy and adjunct lecturer at Desautels.
Mathieu Darche (BCom鈥00) turned down an NCAA Division 1 hockey scholarship to study business management at McGill, but he never strayed far from the ice. As the current Director of Hockey Operations for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Darche is grateful to Desautels for equipping him with the tools he needed to turn his dual passion for hockey and business into a successful career.

Susan Riddell-Fitzpatrick (BCom鈥61) was one of only three women to graduate from McGill with a Commerce degree in 1961. She went on to become Chair of the Montreal Neurological Hospital Board from 1993 to 1995. Looking back, Riddell-Fitzpatrick is grateful for the space McGill has given her and her family members to make history and pursue their dreams.
A new scholarship has been launched in honour of Devon Haye (BCom鈥20), who passed away after a long and courageous battle with lymphatic cancer.
