Forty-five undergraduate students at McGill participated in new Climate Crisis and Climate Actions course
The COVID-19 pandemic slowed down almost everything. For听Diane Dechief, PhD, and听Marcy Slapcoff听of the Office of Science Education (OSE), the two leads of the new Faculty of Science course听FSCI198: Climate Crisis and Climate Actions, there was a positive aspect to the delays.
A silent mass extinction is occurring in lakes, rivers and wetlands. Freshwater species are rapidly disappearing in North America and throughout the world. Conservation-minded people might be unaware of this, because of the media鈥檚 longstanding focus on land-based ecosystems and charismatic animals.
The Government of Canada鈥檚 Environmental Damages Fund, administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), is investing more than $4 million in three McGill-led projects through the Climate Awareness and Action Fund (CAAF).The projects will fill knowledge gaps about the environmental and economic impacts of greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen Canada's capacity to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
What if you could gather as much sustainability-related information as possible about a city, and use it to create an interactive website to be used by wide and diverse audiences? That is essentially what three McGill professors have assembled with Sus 鈥� a new, interactive and fully bilingual English and French-language sustainability dashboard for the Montreal urban area will be launched on听April 25 (in French)听and听April 26 (in English). Its name is a playful reference to 鈥渟ustainability鈥� but its value to the city can be of great consequence.听

The twenty-sixth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be hosted by the United Kingdom, in partnership with Italy. The summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UNFCCC. More than 190 world leaders will participate, along with tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and citizens for twelve days of talks. ()

As the global community is called to re-examine our relationship to the natural world, one thing is certain: despite all our technological advances, humans are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter, and energy, just to name a few. The 2021 theme, 鈥淲e鈥檙e part of the solution鈥�, was chosen to be a continuation of the momentum generated last year under the over-arching theme, 鈥淥ur solutions are in nature鈥�, which served as a reminder that biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges.
Apple rolled out a software update for its mobile devices that gives users the option of stopping apps from tracking their location and sharing other identifying information with third parties. Services such as Facebook and others currently have the ability to track users on mobile devices in order to learn more about them to target advertisements and other location-based services to them. In some instances, the tracking is in place even if the user is not actively using the app in question.
Earth Day, celebrated annually on 22 April, will again see more than 1 billion people participating in activities around the world to draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis and environmental degradation and the need for immediate action. Many important environmental events have happened on Earth Day since its inception in 1970, including the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2016. The theme for this year 鈥� the second Earth Day Live digital event - is: Restore our Earth.
