Business partners Audrey Bolduc and Mitalie Makhani won the 2015 Dobson Cup with their pitch to make fertilizer from used coffee grounds. Now CEO of GroundIt, Ms. Bolduc returns to judge the 2017 Dobson Cup. She sat down with The Dobson Chronicles to talk about her company’s all-natural fertilizer, her incredible experience as a Dobson Cup contestant, how her time at Desautels has moulded who she is as an entrepreneur, and just what possessed her to found a startup while she was still in school.

An undergraduate team from Desautels came home from a case competition in Portugal with an invite to go back for a month-long project aimed at making the city of Porto more attractive to startups. The prize is doubly sweet, as neither the team nor the officials saw it coming. Team member Aarushi Kumar says that “It was not something we were expecting and it was not something the organizers were expecting to do, either.â€

Consulting Magazine has released its 2017 Rising Stars of the Profession 35 Under 35 list, and number 34 on that list is KPMG’s Matthew O’Connell, who is named for Excellence in Financial Services. Mr. O’Connell works in the company’s Forensic Advisory Services Practice, where he deals in anti-corruption, regulatory compliance and conflict minerals. He has taken point on several big-ticket investigations in a multitude of nations.

Congratulation to Desautels undergraduates Amir Fawzy Guirguis,  Charles Lavoie-Aubuchon, Maria Power, and  Samantha Simpson for winning the 2017 CBS Case Competition in Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as to Amir Fawzy Guirguis, in particular, for securing the award for Best Speaker. The latest win at CBS coincides with Desautels’ record of achievement at the international case competition, first securing a win in 2015 and then coming in second the following year.

SmartCEO magazine has named asset management firm Star Mountain Capital to its 2017 New York Future 50 awards list. Star Mountain founder and CEO Brett Hickey will be presented with the award at the Future 50 Gala on March 16. Mr. Hickey was previously President of Aegis Capital Group and an investment banker at Citigroup.

Star Mountain Capital is an up-and-coming lower middle-market asset manager. The Future 50 Awards showcase companies that are playing a notable role in the region’s economy and future.

Congratulations to Desautels BCom students Evan Coulter, Valentyn Litvin, Meagan Prins, and Marina Simonian for winning the PRMIA Risk Management Challenge, marking a third consecutive victory for the Faculty. The team will advance to the International Risk Management Challenge in London, UK on April 7th, 2017 for a chance to win the grand prize of $10,000 USD.

Biopharm company Athenex has tapped independent consultant and McGill Commerce alumnus J. Nick Riehle (BCom’76) to join its executive suite as Chief Financial Officer, pending Board approval. Mr. Riehle brings a lifetime of experience to the position, having previously served as CFO of Chelsea Therapeutics and Haht Commerce. Before that, he spent 17 years at Nortel Networks, and cut his teeth as an analyst at IBM from 1977 to 1979.

Congratulations to BCom student Stephanie Ng-Lun, recipient of this year’s Canada's Outstanding CEO of the Year Futures Fund Scholarship. Award recipients from across Canada were present in Toronto this week to attend a leadership session and special reception held in their honor, as well as to participate in Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year Award Gala Dinner, which recognized Calin Rovinescu, CEO of Air Canada.

The McGill context can be a make-or-break thing when it comes to the University’s ability to take disciplinary action in the case of breach of the Code of Student Conduct at an event that is only peripherally McGill-related. In the latest McGill Tribune, Dean of Students Christopher Buddle points out that events held off-campus by faculty student societies (which are separate legal entities) may not be McGill jurisdiction.

Team captain and Desautels BCom senior Keelan Marks led a remarkable McGill swim team to a second-place overall finish at this past weekend’s RSEQ championships, with 13 medals. Highlights included a sweep of the butterfly events by Samuel Wang and Kate Wist. Wang’s medal count was two golds, one silver and one bronze, while Wist claimed three golds and a personal best in the 400 free.

Patara is a fairtrade, sustainably-produced shoe line made by a small factory in Thailand. It’s also the brainchild of Desautels Faculty of Management student Kilian Rosier, who got the idea while travelling in Asia — and who wanted a pair of shoes he could wear everywhere, from the beach to the café. From there, it was just a small jump to the concept of a fairtrade travel shoe with the green production methods possible.

Christine Tiseo (BCom'95) has been named as one of the 35 Most Influential Women in Mid-Market M&A in Mergers & Acquisitions magazine’s January 2017 issue. She was also recognized in 2016, which was the list’s inaugural year.

Ms. Tiseo is a Managing Director of the Debt Advisory Group at Chicago-based mid-market global investment bank Lincoln International, where she has worked for 12 years. She is also a chartered financial analyst who holds an MBA from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill.

(TSX: IDG), Canada’s largest book, gift and specialty toy retailer has today announced the forthcoming departure of Ms. Laura Carr, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, who will be returning to the UK for personal reasons following the completion of the Company’s third quarter results announcement in February.

Heather Reisman, Indigo CEO, has appointed Mr. Craig Loudon, Indigo’s Senior Vice President, Business Finance, to the position of Interim Chief Financial Officer, effective February 9, 2017.
