Brett Miller (BCom鈥�86) moved to Montreal to study at McGill, but he has made the city his home and become a leader in Quebec鈥檚 business community. Now the CEO of the real estate development company Canderel, Miller is concerned about the Quebec government鈥檚 plan to double tuition for out-of-province students beginning in Fall 2024. 鈥淭o suggest that out-of-province students don鈥檛 contribute to the dynamism of the city is such a false message to send.

McGill Desautels graduate Avneet Bhabra (BCom鈥�23)鈥檚 research paper 鈥�23% and Counting, but Not 鈥極ne Size Fits All鈥�: Helping Canada鈥檚 Immigrants Strengthen Their Financial Knowledge鈥� has been published by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) on Canada.ca. Focusing on financial literacy amongst immigrants in Canada, the paper was selected as a finalist in the undergraduate category of the FCAC鈥檚 2023 Building Better Financial Futures Challenge.

Amidst the struggle to retain young talent, Generation Z's distinct workplace preferences come to the forefront. In his TEDxMcGill talk "Retaining Gen Z talent - An Insider's Perspective," McGill Desautels third-year BCom student Andrei Adam leverages personal experiences and research to offer actionable insights for organizations striving to retain their Gen Z employees. His talk went on to be recognized by TED and selected amongst the handful that receive global promotion, being recommended toTEDx鈥檚 34 million subscribers.

One of this year鈥檚 three Black Grad valedictorians, Julia Ayim (BCom鈥�23) has just completed a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Strategic Management and Organizational Behaviour at the Desautels Faculty of Management. She and fellow graduates were celebrated at the annual Black Grad gala on April 30, a sold-out event organized by the Black Students鈥� Network of McGill (BSN).

To understand the impact of the climate crisis on younger generations, empathy is a place to start. It is a necessary part of confronting, but on its own, it is not enough. Desautels lecturer Anita Nowak (BA'97, BCom'97, PhD'11) recently published her book聽Purposeful Empathy, which is described as聽an inspiring and powerful read by Quebec MNA D茅sir茅e McGraw in a review for Policy Magazine. 鈥淭his is a book that helps middle-aged people like me understand, collaborate and ultimately innovate with the next generation of Millennials and Gen Z,鈥� McGraw says.

Each year, the McGill Desautels African Business Initiative (DABI) brings together attendees, panelists and guest speakers for an opportunity to learn, network and engage in stimulating discussions about the future of business in Africa. This year鈥檚 panelists included Sekou Coulibaly (BCom鈥�03), who was executive director at L鈥橭r茅al before launching a sustainable, made-in-Africa luxury clothing brand called SEKBI Bogolan in 2020.

For Jim West (BA鈥�79) and Justin West (BCom鈥�04), the music industry is a family affair. From a young age, Justin accompanied his father to industry conferences, and during his teenage years, he spent the summers working for his father鈥檚 record label: Justin Time Records. The younger West graduated from Desautels with a degree in accounting, but ultimately followed in his father鈥檚 footsteps. In 2006, he launched a label called Secret City Records.
