Facebook is opening a new Artificial Intelligence Research Lab in Montreal 鈥 FAIR Montreal. This is the company鈥檚 first research and development investment in Canada, and only its fourth AI research lab in all. Prof. Joelle Pineau, from the School of Computer Science and co-director of McGill鈥檚 Reasoning & Learning Lab, will head the new Montreal AI lab while maintaining her academic position at the university.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has observed a planet outside our solar system that looks as black as fresh asphalt because it eats light rather than reflecting it back into space. This light-eating prowess is due to the planet's unique capability to trap at least 94 percent of the visible starlight falling into its atmosphere.

Today, the Royal Society of Canada announced 70 new members to The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, including seven McGill scholars. With seven members, McGill has more new inductees this year than any other university in the country. The new members of the College will address issues of particular concern to Canadian society, including mental health and environmental management, taking advantage of the interdisciplinary approaches fostered by the College.

The CIRM and the McGill鈥檚 Quebec Studies Program learned with great sorrow of the passing of McGill鈥檚 Chancellor Emerita Gretta Chambers. Dear friend of CIRM and the Quebec Studies Program, she is one of those who supported the creation of the first research group dedicated to Montreal studies, at McGill, in 2012. CHancellor Emerita Chambers also has always maintained that our university has an important role to play in the production and dissemination of knowledge about Montreal and the province of Quebec.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our Chancellor Emerita, Gretta Chambers. A Canadian effort to build one of the most innovative radio telescopes in the world will open the universe to a new dimension of scientific study. The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, today installed the final piece of this new radio telescope, which will act as a time machine allowing scientists to create a three-dimensional map of the universe extending deep into space and time.

It is with great pleasure that the CIRM welcomes, for a second consecutive year, Mr. Gorka Espiau as听Professor of practice of the McConnell听Foundation Program. Strong of his experience as Director of International Affairs and Places program of the Young Foundation (London), as Special Advisor to the Executive Office of the Basque President and as co-founder of SILK, a social innovation laboratory in the Basque countries, Gorka Espiau brings to Montreal and provides to the CIRM an international perspective on the social transformations taking place in the city.

Since 2014, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal has had the standing of a provisional center of the Faculty of Arts of 香蕉视频. On May 25th this year, following a one-year evaluation process, the Senate of 香蕉视频 granted the CIRM the status of a permanent research center. For the CIRM, this is an important step in its development and we look forward to announcing good news regarding the future of the Center.听
