Even though she grew up on a farm, Stéphanie Naud had never touched an axe or saw before studying at McGill's Mac campus. As a natural athlete who loved the outdoors and working with her hands,when she heard about our unique inter-university lumberjack club, she was intrigued,she recently told Le journal de Montréal.

On March 18, the familiar sounds of sawing and chopping filled the air of Macdonald Campus with the return of the Macdonald Campus Woodsmen Competition. On hiatus since the outset of the pandemic, the 61st edition of the competition drew hundreds of enthusiastic spectators cheering on athletes from six schools: Colby College, Dalhousie Agricultural Campus, Dartmouth College, Sir Sanford Fleming College, UNB and the host team from Mac.

McGill’s men and women’s teams won top honours at the 58th annual Macdonald College Woodsmen competition, held January 27 at the Macdonald Campusin Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Qc. Nineteen teams representing seven schools, Dalhousie, UNB, Fleming College, Algonquin College, Dartmouth and Maritime College of Forest Technology, competed in team, double and individual chopping and sawing events showcasing skills reminiscent of traditional lumberjacking.

It is with sadness that we note the passing of Bryan Murray, DipEd(PE)'64, recipient of the 2016 Macdonald Distinguished Alumni Award.

"A native of Shawville, Que., Murray was a student-athlete at 㽶Ƶ's Macdonald College campus in the 1960s and went on to develop his coaching and administrative skills by guiding the Macdonald Aggies football team and the Macdonald Clansmen hockey squad while serving four years as director of athletics."

The new Paddle Shack at the Macdonald Campus makes McGill the only Canadian university with an on-campus boat house.

The “Mac Paddle Shack,” which opened July 15, gives paddlers and would-be paddlers a chance to enjoy the waters of Lac St. Louis on a kayak, paddle board (SUP) or in a canoe. Hourly rentals, paddling instruction and paddle board yoga classes are available to the general public, and McGill and John Abbott College communities.

We are excited to announce the opening this summer of the Mac Paddle Shack. Operated by Athletics and Recreation and servicing the McGill community as well as John Abbott, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and the general public, the Mac Paddle Shack will offer hourly kayak, stand up paddle board (SUP) and canoe rentals, paddling instruction and paddle board yoga classes.

The sun was out, the saws were out and our Woodsmen teams performed fabulously over the weekend. Thanks to all on campus and the many alumni who helped make the 56th annual Woodsmen Competition a success.
