The Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney (1768-1783)

Ìý

General Editor: Lars Troide

A new scholarly edition of TheÌýEarly Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney (1768-1783)Ìýhas been published in five volumes by McGill-Queen's University Press and Oxford University Press. These journals span her late girlhood and early adult life.

Burney began keeping a journal of her experiences in London's musical, theatrical, and literary circles as a shy and precocious girl of 15. She had a keen intelligence, a marvellous sense of humour, and an exceptional memory, all of which are evident in the detailed picture of eighteenth-century English society presented in her writings. She gives first-hand descriptions of many of the important figures of the time, such as David Garrick, Christopher Smart, and Antonio Sacchini.

This edition reproduces her earliest journals in their original form, replacing omitted and altered passages. It shows her development as an artist and contains typically vivid sketches of her family, friends, and acquaintances in London and the country. Though the early journals have been printed before, this edition provides the first full text of Burney's early journals, accompanied by thorough annotations which explain the context in which the journals were written.

The Court Journals and Letters of Frances Burney (1786-1791)

General Editor:ÌýPeter Sabor

A new scholarly edition of The Court Journals and Letters of Frances Burney, written during her five years of service as Keeper of the Robes to Queen Charlotte, 1786-1791, has been published in six volumes by Oxford University Press.

Burney's journals were especially copious during her years at court, and this rich mass of material is of particular interest to social and political historians, as well as literary scholars.

It includes detailed descriptions of George III's behaviour and treatment during his first period of derangement and extensive reports of the trial of Warren Hastings in Westminster Hall, with Burke and Sheridan among the prosecutors.
