Academic Administrative Appointments

Academic administrative appointments are primarily based on academic leadership and administration. To be eligible for such an appointment, an academic or library staff member must hold a primary tenure-track or tenured or contract academic staff position.

Definition

Vice-Dean A vice-dean serves as deputy to a Faculty dean on one or more dossiers as assigned by the dean.

Associate Dean

An associate dean performs such duties as may be assigned by a dean, and may work under a vice-dean.

Assistant Dean

An assistant dean performs such duties as may be assigned by a dean, and may work under an associate dean.

Department Chair

The head of a department. The University Statues provide that, "There shall be a Chair of each Department appointed in accordance with the provisions of Articles 1.3.4.2 and 8.1.6." (, Articles 9.1.1, 9.2.1).

Associate Chair

An associate chair performs such duties as may be assigned by a department chair.

Director (Chair-equivalent)

The head of a unit equivalent to a department. The University Statues provide that, "There shall be over each [School, Institute, Centre or other academic unit of the University] a Director. The Director of each School, Institute, Centre or other academic unit shall be under the direction and supervision of the Dean of the Faculty to which it has been allocated and shall exercise the functions of Chair of a Department." (, Articles 10.1 and 10.2).

Associate Director

An associate director performs such duties as may be assigned by a director.

Director (Other)

A director (other) leads a unit or area which is not a full department or school/institute. A director performs such duties as may be assigned by a dean.

Branch Head

A branch head is responsible for the operations of a library branch. Appointments vary from 3 to 5 years with the possibility of renewal.

Team Coordinator

A team coordinator is a position within the University Library network. A team coordinator provides guidance to a group of employees with in a branch or a service for the purpose of achieving a key result (cataloguing of rare material for example); which ensure that the results of the team are aligned with the strategic plan of the unit they are part of. A team coordinator reports to a branch head or an associate director within the Libraries.

Program Director

A program director leads an academic program within a department, school, or institute in the Faculty of Medicine (e.g., a residency training program). Please note that an appointment to this classification cannot be a stand-alone academic appointment at the University.

Medical Director

A medical director is assigned additional duties as director of a division of a department in a hospital. It also designates core members of staff who are receiving stipends for special duties of a temporary nature assigned to them by the Dean of Medicine. Please note that an appointment to this classification cannot be a stand-alone academic appointment at the University.
