The NSSE is administered by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. It was developed in 1998 with the goal of better understanding how institutions foster student engagement and use effective teaching practices, and has beenmodified over time to reflect current research on the most effective teaching practices. More information is available from the NSSE website:.

Along with other members of the Group of Canadian Research Universities (U15), McGill administers the NSSE on a three-year cycle. We share our de-identified internal data in order to continually improve the student experience, and benchmark against the members of the Association of American Universities Data Exchange.

The transition from the MS Excel format to Tableau offers new capabilities:

  • The composition of up to 10 major-field groups can be modified as often as desired, with immediate turnaround.
  • Results can be filtered by student background variables, affording nuanced investigation of the experience of subpopulations within major-field groups.
  • In addition to Engagement Indicators and participation in High-Impact Practices, the MFR includes results for Sense of Belonging, Perceived Gains, academic challenge items, and estimates of time spent on selected activities. It also includes a summary page that displays all NSSE items and scales.

The CUSC manages undergraduate student surveys at the national level. CUSC surveys cover student engagement and student satisfaction in relation to the postsecondary experience. Three surveys are conducted on a three-year cycle basis: one questioning first-year students, one questioning “middle years” students, and another targeting graduating students.McGill withdrew participation in CUSC surveys after 2017.
