In the second instalment of our series recapping our favourite #PSEWeb 2023 sessions, Joyce Peralta (Manager, Digital Communications) shares her takeaways on keynote address on AI-related opportunities.
Session title: Artificial Intelligence: Embracing Opportunities, Responsibly
What I liked about this presentation
It's hard to pick just one favourite, but if I can only pick one it would be Frincy Clement's keynote. Among the many, often perplexing presentations and articles about AI that I came across this year, Frincy's presentation was refreshingly grounded - focused on real world stories about people involved in AI research, practical applications, and helpful guidelines.
What I learned
So many things! It was interesting to see global statistics on AI adoption and to hear Frincy speak about the differences between Canadian statistics compared with the rest of the world. The chart demonstrating where AI can be used in a customer journey was illuminating and relevant to the work we do, as was the breakdown of applications of AI in education.Â
I also really enjoyed learning about the Women in AI organization and their initiatives for shaping inclusive AI.
My takeaways
We often associate problems with plagiarism and copyright with using AI, but there are other considerations as well. I wasn’t previously aware of the I: Common good, Transparency, Equitability, Accountability, Inclusiveness, Non-maleficence and Accessibility. I believe this is good information for us to keep in mind as we look to add guidelines for using AI to our Digital Standards.
