New professorial hire at the Faculty

Published: 11 June 2024

We are delighted to announce that Jonathan Chan will join the Faculty of Law as an assistant professor on 1 August 2024. An expert in law and finance, he will begin by teaching Securities Regulation and Introduction to Corporate Transactions in winter 2025.

Before joining McGill, Professor Jonathan Chan served as a lecturer (assistant professor) at University College London (UCL), from 2021 to 2024. He was previously a departmental lecturer in Law & Finance at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on corporate law and securities regulation; he is working on projects involving comparative capital markets regulation and contemporary issues in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Professor Chan’s work has been published or is forthcoming in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Corporate Law Studies, the European Business Organization Law Review, and the Canadian Bar Review.

At UCL, Professor Chan led the Faculty of Laws’ efforts to remedy the difference in academic achievement by undergraduate white British students when compared with undergraduate Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) British students, serving as BAME Awarding Gap Faculty Lead.

Professor Chan holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Toronto and an MSc in Law & Finance and DPhil in Law from the University of Oxford. His doctoral studies were supported by an SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Award. Prior to embarking in academia, he practiced in M&A and securities with a large law firm in Toronto.

“We’re excited to welcome an outstanding emerging scholar who will further bolster our teaching and research relating to business law,” said Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E. “We look forward to the valuable contributions his international outlook will bring to our distinctive BCL/JD program.”
