Published: 14 November 2024

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Lara Khoury, Ad E, has been named Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Liability, Health Governance, and Social Change. The appointment is for a seven-year term.

A full professor, Lara Khoury is a leading expert in the fields of comparative medical, public health and environmental law, with a focus on liability. She is co-founder of the McGill Research Group on Health and Law (RGHL), which serves as an important interdisciplinary bridge between researchers at McGill and the community interested in advancing health law and policy. In January 2024, she was appointed associate vice-president of research at McGill.

Professor Khoury’s scholarship has been cited nearly 60 times by Canadian judges – including twice by the Supreme Court. She is the author of Uncertain Causation in Medical Liability (Hart Publishing; French translation by Yvon Blais), which received the 2004 Prix Minerve and the 2008 Quebec Bar Foundation Prize. In 2019, she was elected a titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, and she received the Barreau du Québec's Advocatus Emeritus (Ad E) designation. In 2023, she received the Canadian Bar Association’s prestigious Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award.

The Canada Research Chairs Program is part of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world’s top countries in research and development. It invests up to $311 million per year to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds. McGill Law is home to eight Canada Research Chairs, a remarkable representation that is one of the highest among Canadian law faculties.

“I’m proud to see our colleague’s outstanding scholarship recognized with this prestigious appointment, which will support her leading research for years to come,” said Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E. “Professor Khoury embodies our Faculty’s commitment to addressing pressing societal issues through ambitious and innovative legal scholarship.”
