Most video projects can be divided into three phases: pre-production, production, and post-production.

Step 1: Pre-production

Pre-production is everything that happens before a camera starts rolling. It consists of multiple steps of planning and preparation, which are essential for project success. Pre-production includes the following steps:

  • Request: through email or a creative brief
  • Initial Meeting: to discuss scope of project
  • Budget: we provide an estimate based on our first meeting
  • Scripting or storyboarding: this is often a collaborative process between our clients, subject matter experts, and our team.
  • Production Planning: scheduling, locations, interviewees, organizing people and equipment

Step 2: Production

Production is the process of recording video and creating other digital assets such as graphics and animation. Some projects may not even have a Production phase, for example if only existing assets are used. The steps of Production are:

  • Filming on location or in-studio: Most filming is done with one or two videographers. More complex, multi-camera projects may require three or more videographers. Projects involving actors normally require a Director, who can be hired through us.
  • Voiceover Recordings: are usually done in our sound booth. Some projects require a professional narrator and others can be done by someone within McGill. Many of our videos are bilingual, so we are accustomed to producing two versions or a mixed version.
  • Graphics Production: Graphics are common in our video projects. Often our clients provide their own graphics based on existing powerpoint presentations. We then adapt these graphics for video. If new graphics are needed, like inforgraphics and diagrams, we recommend consulting the McGill Graphic Design Studio.
  • Animation: We can do simple animation in house as part of our service. If more advanced animation is needed, for example 3D animations, we may hire freelancers based on the project's needs.

Step 3: Post-Production

Post-Production is the process of bringing all the elements together into a finished video. Post-production involves:

  • Editing: organizing, trimming, and arranging media
  • Colour correction: creating consistent colour throughout
  • Titling: adding titles such as credentials and credits
  • Audio: balancing audio, filtering out unwanted noise
  • Music: adding music from a music library
  • Formatting: Video files must be compressed for sharing Different aspect ratios may also be needed for social media, such as square or portrait framing.
  • Captions: many videos require captions and translated versions
  • Media Management: we keep all digital assets organized on our storage so that you may request an update to your video in the future.
