Sara Mahshid
Prof. Mahshid's research focuses on engineering new approaches in lab-on-chip devices via synergistically combining nanostructured materials with micro/nanofluidic sample delivery systems for high throughput and rapid detection of pathogens in environmental and human samples at the point of need. In particular, microfluidic platforms can improve health care access and sustainability by providing the ability of precise manipulation of small amounts of fluid. Her research has led to the successful implementation of the nanosurface fluidic devices for rapid and quantitative detection of E. coli and S. aureus in biological samples. Currently, she is collaborating with MI4 (The McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity) and EnviroSen Inc. to explore the application of proposed fluidic platforms for detection of parasites and bacteria in environmental samples for the purpose of controlling infections among vulnerable populations.
