Full Project Description

The aim of this project is to fill a gap in other SPF projects relating to the use of plants and other botanical in the historical therapeutics and treatment of disease. The small display of plants will provide an opportunity for the McGill community and other visitors to learn about the medicinal properties of plants, their historical and current applications and the importance of biodiversity and the erosion of traditional knowledge of the therapeutic use of plants.

Two empty large planter boxes are located on the top of the stairs on the south side of the Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building (west end W 25 in x L 51 in X 21 in deep; east end W 25 in x L 69 in X 21 in deep). The main entrance is used by students, faculty, staff, and other visitors. The proposal for this project is to have the McGill Facilities horticultural services prepare the planter boxes. SPF funding will be used to offset the costs relating to theÌýpreparation of the planter boxes. Volunteers and staff from the MAMM will take responsibility for planting selected plants and maintenance of the planters.

The aim is to use this space as a showcase for plants and focus on their historical and current use in medicine. A companion webpage on the MAMM website (/medicalmuseum/) will be created. The web site will provide names of the plants and medicinal uses. Signage will be posted on the palnters with a QR code with a link to the page.
