Taught Master's

Ï㽶ÊÓƵ

The Taught Master's is like your undergraduate degree, you attend classes and perform projects and you must accumulate 45 credits from graduate level advanced courses, in typically 3 semesters. This is sometimes also referred to as a non-thesis master's because there is no thesis to pass at the end, once you have the required credits you may qualify. That is not to say there is no research, indeed many of our taught master's students publish great work. There are research project courses that enable you to try different types of research or to double up and perform a more in depth study, similar to a thesis project. This is a great way to see if research is for you and to gain experience in different research methodologies. For those of you familiar with graduate schools in the US, this would be the most similar equivalent. Students in this program have great flexibility; you can transfer into a research (thesis) master's or even a PhD if your research project goes well. You may decide not to complete the Master's in which case you may consider transferring to a 30 credit diploma or the 15 credit certificate.

For those of you keen to become employed after graduation the taught master's offers summer courses based around the successful completion of internships in the medtech sector and many of our students go on to become permanent employees of their internship hosts upon graduation.

There are two streams of taught master's, the regular stream in which you can to some extent self-select courses from a preselected menu, or as a concentration in Oncology. In this latter program students must take specific courses on the topic of Oncology and oncological care.

Taught Master's of Science (MSc) in Surgical and Interventional Sciences (Core Stream)

This stream provides a broad overview of surgical and interventional sciences through structured coursework. It is suitable for students seeking advanced knowledge in surgical principles without a dedicated research component. Graduates often pursue further education in healthcare or transition into industry roles.

Taught Master's of Science (MSc) in Surgical and Interventional Sciences - Oncology

This concentration focuses on the surgical management of cancer. Students gain in-depth knowledge of cancer biology, surgical oncology techniques, and multidisciplinary care. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in surgical oncology, research, or related healthcare fields.

Master's of Science (MSc) Otolaryngology

The Master's of Science degree offered by the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery provides inter-disciplinary training for clinical or basic science research in Otolaryngology.
