Program Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Foundations in Health Sciences Education focuses on theoretical and evidence-based knowledge and practical skills in the areas of teaching and learning, curriculum and course design, assessment and evaluation, leadership, and scholarship as applied to health sciences education. Program content includes contemporary educational and psychological concepts, theories, and evidence-based practices relevant to specific contexts in which health and health science professionals practice, and the different educational roles they are likely to assume. The blended learning format includes face-to-face instruction, and synchronous and asynchronous online learning. The program includes project-based assignments that build on one another, provide opportunities to integrate courses, and explore their application to authentic personal contexts.

    Overview

    Ed Psych & Couns (Psychology) : Introductory principles and issues related to assessment, and also specific to the workplace-based contexts specific to health sciences education (HSE). Concepts include: creating and using assessments for decision-making; generating feedback for learners; and examining the quality of assessments, and critical assessment literacy on the uses and interpretations of assessment in HSE. Basic principles of program evaluation, introduction to several frameworks used to guide its design, and key steps in formulating an evaluation plan.

    HSED : Foundations in health sciences education including a broad introduction to ideas of scholarship, research and evidence-based practice, and theory-informed educational decision-making. Essentials of different research traditions and methodological approaches to advance, use, and critically evaluate works of scholarship in health sciences education. Fundamentals of ethical research, knowledge translation, and dissemination for responsible application of knowledge to important problems.
