In partnership with the , and as a part of their Global Changemakers Speaker Series, Dr. Laurie Gottlieb and the SBNH Partnership Grant were thrilled to hold the second annual Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Global Check-Up on July 13th, 2022. Over 200 people across five continents attended the event. Participants were clinicians, nursing and healthcare leaders, educators, researchers, and students.
Pam Hubley, co-investigator of the SBNH Partnership Grant and the new Chief Nursing Executive and Vice President Health Professions at the University Health Network in Toronto, gave an energizing keynote address on how SBNH Leadership can be used to restore and re-set during pandemic times. Hubley guided the audience to reflect on their pandemic experiences and to consider their current work culture. She demonstrated how leaders can be guided by the SBNH Leadership approach to create healthier work environments, speak up for change, enable self-determination in their teams, create intentional collaborations, and thrive at work.
Following Hubley’s keynote address, an international panel of nursing leaders, educators, and researchers from Burkina Faso, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, and Portugal each gave a brief talk on the many ways that they have integrated SBNH into their work:
- John Kayser, RN, BSc(N), MSc(A), PhD, CPMHN(C)®, is a Senior Nursing Advisor and the project lead of SBNH implementation a the Montréal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS). Kayser described the origins, strategic vision, milestones, and ingredients for success of the SBNH Clinical Partnership Group. This group includes members from three healthcare networks in Montreal with a mandate to develop a strategic vision and implementation plan for SBNH across their healthcare networks.
- Elizabeth Bernardino, RN, PhD, is the Head, Division of Care Management, Hospital de ClĂnicas Complex, and professor of nursing at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. Bernardino gave a summary of her doctoral students’ SBNH research projects, her co-authored SBNH publications, and the different SBNH initiatives in Paraná to demonstrate how SBNH has influenced clinical practice and created a new paradigm for nursing leadership.
- Paula Encarnação, RN, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Nursing, University of Minho, Portugal. Encarnação described how she has embedded the four phases of the spiraling process into simulation-based learning. She discussed how this training encourages nursing students to use the five senses effectively in their nursing practice to uncover strengths and facilitate healing.

Rothan-Tondeur was joined by colleagues Charlotte Havreng-Théry, Rita Nohra, Valérie Loizeau, and Léa Peroni. They described their efforts to integrate SBNH into their graduate research and clinical practice. Havreng-Théry presented her research to improve the quality of life for nursing home residents through a collaborative SBNH approach involving residents, families, and healthcare workers. Nohra described her research to improve both the knowledge and quality of life of patients with chronic illnesses in Lebanon through nursing consultations and tele-medicine. Loizeau described her work to implement the SBNH model in clinical practice.
- Kaboré Safiata, PhD (c), is a Doctoral Candidate in Quality Management, Standardization and Metrology, a Health Advisor specializing in Quality Management and Gender, and the Head of the Evaluation and Quality Department at the National Institute of Public Health in Burkina Faso. The panel was followed by a fireside chat with Dr. Laurie Gottlieb, developer of SBNH, and Mike Villeneuve, co-investigator of the Partnership Grant and former CEO of the Canadian Nurses Association. Finally, we closed with a special mini-presentation by Dr. Judith Lapierre, advisory member of the SBNH Partnership, and Dr. Bruce Gottlieb, co-investigator of the SBNH Partnership, on the development of Global SBNH Communities of Practice.
