Prof. Bruce A. Reed, Humboldt Research Award
Congratulations to Prof. Bruce A. Reed, FRSC, Canada Research Chair in Graph Theory in the School of Computer Science for receiving a prestigious Humboldt Research Award. This award recognizes researchers at the peak of their careers whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline, and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.
Professor Reed develops algorithms to solve complex problems from the theory of graphs and networks. These are essential to communications, whether the network is the actual structure of a telecommunications system or the series of wires on a microchip. He works to understand the structure of large, complex networks — such as the World Wide Web and mobile telephone systems — and to analyze the connections within them.
The Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards annually. Award winners are invited to spend up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany. The award is valued at 60,000 Euros.
