Long-term care (LTC) facilities in Quebec and Ontario have been facing the rapid spread of COVID-19 among residents and staff, and currently, over 80% of the reported COVID-19 related deaths in province of Quebec and over 70% of the reported COVID-19 related deaths in province of Ontario are from public and private nursing homes.
Thu, 22 Dec 2022 00:16:30 +0000 amanda.testani@mcgill.ca 732 at /research Future Ready: The Authentic Educator /research/article/future-ready-authentic-educator
In the summer of 2012, in Queens, New York, a 12-year-old boy dove for a basketball at school and cut his arm. He awoke the next morning with a high fever, vomiting, mottled skin and low blood pressure. His pediatrician diagnosed him with stomach flu and sent the boy to hospital to get re-hydrated. The emergency room doctors gave him fluids, ran blood tests and sent him home with instructions to take Tylenol.
Wed, 21 Dec 2022 23:43:53 +0000 Mark Witten 721 at /research McGill and FAU join forces for AI in Medicine /research/article/mcgill-and-fau-join-forces-ai-medicine
Globalization is such a well-established notion, it requires no explanation, but what might surprise some is to what extent it is prevalent in higher education. In countries such as the UK and France, over 50% of all published research papers involve an international co-author, according to a Times Higher Education report. And while the rate is lower in the US, Canada is closer to its European peers in this regard at 48% of all papers published.
Wed, 21 Dec 2022 22:42:07 +0000 amanda.testani@mcgill.ca 718 at /research Cutting-edge technology detects nanoplastics in water – instantly /research/channels/news/cutting-edge-technology-detects-nanoplastics-water-instantly-357890
A McGill-led research team has developed the first real-time, on-site technology capable of detecting and deciphering nanoplastics from all other particles in water, a capacity akin to being able to find a needle in a haystack within milliseconds.

Microplastic pieces are between 1 micrometre and 5 millimetres, roughly equivalent to a grain of rice. Nanoplastics are far tinier - a single nanometre is just 0.000001 millimetres. For comparison, a human hair is approximately 80,000–100,000 nanometers wide.
Thu, 04 Jul 2024 17:50:18 +0000 admin 5659 at /research $4.5 million for three FRQS Dual Chairs in Artificial Intelligence and Health co-led by McGill researchers /research/channels/news/45-million-three-frqs-dual-chairs-artificial-intelligence-and-health-co-led-mcgill-researchers-351138
The FRQS Dual AI Chairs Program supports research collaborations across disciplines in pursuit of the significant potential of AI to address some of humanity’s greatest health challenges.
Wed, 11 Oct 2023 15:33:06 +0000 megan.liley@mcgill.ca 1338 at /research $3.75 M for new Global Climate Center on AI and Biodiversity Change /research/channels/news/375-m-new-global-climate-center-ai-and-biodiversity-change-351041
NSERC Alliance Grant supports McGill-led Canadian team, new global climate center on AI for biodiversity change
Wed, 11 Oct 2023 15:33:06 +0000 megan.liley@mcgill.ca 1335 at /research Four McGill researchers awarded prestigious AI chairs /research/channels/news/four-mcgill-researchers-awarded-prestigious-ai-chairs-327819
By Meaghan Thurston

Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) program provides long-term, dedicated research funding to support and train the next generation of AI leaders.

Consider a question: “How many students took each calculus class?” A seemingly simple inquiry that soon turns complicated if you are trying to teach an artificial neural network to produce a database query based on the question – something that could be usefully applied in an academic setting.
Wed, 11 Oct 2023 15:23:14 +0000 megan.liley@mcgill.ca 1254 at /research SSHRC and Genome Canada support cross-sectoral research /research/article/sshrc-and-genome-canada-support-cross-sectoral-research
On Friday, June 16, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Genome Canada awarded more than $890,000 in funding to 30 projects across Canada under the Knowledge Synthesis Grants program, including two to McGill.
