Dr. Suzane Renaud (Associate Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry) Inaugurated as President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association

Dr. Suzane Renaud, a clinical psychiatrist from Montreal, Quebec, who specializes in treating bipolar and personality disorders, was inaugurated as President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association.

Prior to joining the Douglas Institute where she has worked for the past five years an outpatient clinic, she worked in the Community Mental Health Centre at CHUM's Saint Luc Hospital for over 20 years, principally treating patients with psychotic illnesses.  At CHUM she served as both interim Department Chief (2001) and as Service Chief (2004-2006) of General Psychiatry.

Dr. Renaud is also an educator with many years of experience teaching and supervising medical students and psychiatry residents.  She is an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ where, among other teaching duties, she supervises residents in the long term treatment of patients with psychodynamic psychotherapy.  An active conference participant and writer, Dr. Renaud is implicated in continued professional development in the area of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.  She also conducts periodic clinical research in the area of personality disorders.

After completing her medical degree at Laval University and obtaining her medical license in 1977, Dr. Renaud continued her medical education with a residency in social and community psychiatry at the University of California in San Francisco.  She was granted her psychiatry license in 1982 after completing her psychiatric training with another year of residency in child psychiatry at Montreal's Hospital for Sick Children.  Following this, Dr. Renaud pursued her psychodynamic education with four years of psychoanalytical training through the Canadian Psychoanalytical Society.

Dr. Renaud has long been involved in organized psychiatry at both the provincial, national and north- american levels. For many years she was active in the American Psychiatric Association, first as the secretary of the Quebec and Eastern Canada District Branch, and then as the Branch's President and Board member, attending the APA assembly as a delegate.  Dr. Renaud is an elected Montreal-Laval delegate to the Association des médécins psychiatres du Quebec (AMPQ), Quebec's provincial psychiatric association, as well as a delegate to the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec, Quebec's federation of physician-specialists.  She has served on AMPQ committees including the Board of Directors and the Human Resources Committee, which she currently chairs.  Her contributions to the Canadian Psychiatric Association are also of longstanding.

For 10 years, she served on the CPA Membership Affairs Committee, including five years as Vice-Chair, and is currently finishing a six year term on the CPA Council of Provinces.  She has been a member of the CPA Board Executive since 2009.
