Our collective trauma: How will the pandemic change us?
We won’t know for certain until we emerge from this pandemic purgatory how changed we are or how different our world is. This much, though, we do know: We are all vulnerable to cataclysmic disruption. “Older people have psychological and cognitive resources to deal with setbacks in life, whereas for people in their 20s accustomed to a rich and varied social life, it can be a much more difficult pandemic,” said Rob Whitley, an associate professor in McGill’s department of psychiatry and an investigator at the Douglas Research Centre focused on how social and economic circumstances influence mental health, suicide and depression.
