Dr. Umberto Spampinato Biosketch

Dr Spampinato is currently Professor of Neuropharmacology at the University of Bordeaux, in France where he heads the “Neuropharmacology and Functional Neurochemistry” Research Group, in the INSERM Unit 1215, and is also associate consultant in the Neurology Department for Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, and in the Genetic Department for Huntington’s disease. His academic education was paralleled by extensive preclinical and clinical research training, which started in 1974 in Italy, and continued in different well-renowned neurochemistry and neuropharmacology laboratories and neurology departments in Italy and France until his own research group was established in the University of Bordeaux 2 in 1991. Throughout his career, Dr Spampinato's research has focused on the functional role of serotonin in the basal ganglia, with particular attention to the serotonin-dopamine interaction and its relevance for the mechanisms of action of psychotropic drugs, the neurobiological bases of extrapyramidal disorders and drug addiction. He is also actively involved in clinical studies on Parkinson's disease, Huntington’s disease and participates in the evaluation of new pharmacological treatments for these disorders.
