Science from the Sharif Lab leads to creation of pain ointment

Published: 10 November 2020

Research performed in one of our physiology labs has led to a scientifically-backed product that directly helps humans.

PteroTech Inc., a Canadian company co-founded by faculty member Dr. Reza Sharif and PhD candidate Stephanie Mouchbahani-Constance, has just released , an ointment that blocks the pain caused by lionfish and jellyfish stings. After years of researching lionfish venom, Reza and Stephanie were able to identify the molecule that the venom targets on pain-sensing cells’ surface, and have found ways to block the pain the venom causes. They used their findings to develop an innovative, rapid-relief, over-the-counter product that will hopefully help divers everywhere. Great work!
