John Zucchi, professor and chair of the Department of History and Classical Studies at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ. He addressed the Dying with Dignity Special Commission with Dr. Gerald Batist, representing 54 Ï㽶ÊÓƵ professors who have submitted a brief opposing euthanasia and assisted suicide.
"…on the question of euthanasia. It is about much more than asserting the right to time our own death. There is something more sacrosanct than rights, and that is life itself and the hope that sustains it. Our choice is between hopelessness and hope, between despair and another way of looking at life, where we are not masters of our own destinies but rather human beings who uphold our fellow human beings, and are willing to be accompanied by others. It is about solidarity, affirming the good life and therefore not being afraid to face a good death."
