The Globe and Mail - Sluggish economy sparks worry
Published: 1 September 2010
The Canadian economy grew more slowly through the spring and early summer than expected, raising fresh concerns about the strength of the economic recovery. The latest GDP report from Statistics Canada, released Tuesday, also cast doubt on whether the Bank of Canada will continue raising interest rates.
"We have known for a long time that the fastest growth in a recovery is in the first quarters because we're coming from the depth. We do have to slow down eventually to something that is more sustainable over the long term," said Christopher Ragan, associate professor of economics at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ in Montreal. "But it does reflect a growing unease with what's going on in the U.S. economy.''
