CTV, Sympatico - Newsmaker: Antonia Maioni on Quebec's turbulent politics

Published: 23 January 2012

After a weekend where Quebec's political landscape shifted, McGill political science professor Antonia Maioni saw no end to the ongoing strife transforming the National Assembly.

"Gilles Duceppe has made a lot of political hay and reaped a lot of poltical benefit from saying that he was above politics and above corruption," said Maioni, about the former Bloc Quebecois leader.

After allegations surfaced over the weekend that the Bloc had allegedly used parliamentary funds to pay a party insider, Duceppe retreated from the public eye on Sunday, ending the hopes of some that he would take over the provincial party.

"Given his age, this is probably the end of his search for a career in Quebec politics," said Maioni.
