The Australian, The Age - End of Alzheimer's curse 'a decade away'

Published: 19 September 2011

Visiting lecturer John Breitner warns that there is no known cause of Alzheimer's disease, responsible for up to 75 per cent of dementia cases. But new technologies are improving understanding of the disease, leading him to conclude that within 10 years drugs will be developed to prevent Alzheimer's.

"Alzheimer's disease is a chronic, biological illness caused by changes in the brain that can, to some extent, be detected at least 10 and possibly up to 20 or 30 years before the disease itself is diagnosed," said Dr Breitner, director of the Centre for Studies on Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease at Canada's Ï㽶ÊÓƵ.
