After distinguishing himself in a nationwide search that ended in a live audition earlier this spring, Simon Rivard (MMus '17) has been appointed the new (TSYO). This announcement follows a wave of other recent successes by Simon, including his inclusion on CBC’s list of “” and a noteworthy tenure as the Associate Conductor of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.

For his new position with the TSO, Simon will have complete access to TSO rehearsals and will work with the TSO’s incoming Interim Artistic Director Sir Andrew Davis (and other guest conductors).

He’ll also have the chance to conduct select TSO events in the upcoming season. Of the opportunity, Simon explained, “This nomination is a fantastic learning opportunity for me. The first thing I felt was deep gratitude; the TSO and TSYO staff and musicians, as well as Sir Andrew Davis, were warm and welcoming. Conducting the Prelude to the Afternoon of Faun with such fabulous and sensitive musicians was a privilege in itself. I’m looking forward to discovering and experiencing the unique culture of this organization. I’m ready to put all my heart and passion into it!”

Professors Alexis Hauser and Guillaume Bourgogne, Simon’s teachers during his time at Schulich, also expressed excitement about the new position. Bourgogne summed up the situation saying, “Simon Rivard’s success at the TSO is a great happiness but not a surprise! He is starting a very promising carrier and this position is a fantastic new step.”
