2022-2023 Golden Violin Award Finalists Announced
We are pleased to announce that the three finalists for the 2022-2023 Golden Violin Award are violist Gene Hotta, and violinists JuEun Lee and Frédéric Pouliot.
These string players were selected following an incredible semifinal round held on Friday, December 9, 2022 at Pollack Hall where seven semifinalists each performed a 30-minute program of music before only three were selected by a jury to continue through to the finals.Â
For the final on Sunday, December 11 at 2:00 pm, candidates will present a program of 40 minutes of music of their choice, excluding the repertoire presented at the semifinal round. Â
The jury comprises both Schulich String Area members and colleagues from outside of McGill. The Schulich members of the jury include Elizabeth Dolin, Assistant Professor of Cello Performance and Axel Strauss, Professor of Violin Performance and String Area Coordinator. Our external jury members include Lambert Chen (DMus'08), the 2007-2008 Golden Violin winner and current solo violist of the Orchestre symphonique de montréal; Erika Raum, Canadian violinist and two-time Grammy nominee for her work in the ARC Chamber Ensemble dedicated to bringing underrepresented 20th century composers and their works to light and Claude Richard, a violinist and professor at l’Université de Montréal critically acclaimed for his work in chamber music. The jury is chaired by André Roy, Associate Professor of Viola Performance at the Schulich School of Music.Â
The winner receives a generous scholarship, valued at $30,000, as well as a smaller likeness of the violin in the form of a 14-karat gold lapel pin. In addition, the winner will perform in the upcoming Schulich concert season. The Schulich Foundation also offers scholarship to the finalists who place second and third, each will receive $15,000 and $5,000 respectively.  Â
The Golden Violin Award was established in 2006 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, a year after he donated $20 million to McGill’s Schulich School of Music. Made of pewter and gold plate, the Golden Violin remains on permanent display in McGill’s Marvin Duchow Music Library.  Â
