JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Goldberg Variations, BWV 988Ìý
Concert presented as part of les Journées de la culture
Calling all keyboard lovers! The famous Goldberg Variations are played in two special concerts by Schulich professor Ilya Poletaev. With the first evening featuring the modern piano and the second embracing the historical keyboard,Ìýyou are invited to immerse yourself in these stunning sound worlds.ÌýÌý
What makes the instruments so distinct?ÌýOn a harpsichord, when you press a key, the string is plucked. In contrast, the piano resounds when hammers strike the strings (technically making it a percussion instrument). Hear how the sublime music of Bach comes to life in different ways with each keyboard. You won’t want to miss a note. ÌýÌý
Curious for more? At each concert Prof. Poletaev will answer questions and discuss how each instrument shaped his approach and interpretation of Bach’s magnificent music.
