In the time it takes most people to check their email, men can have their prostate checked – an examination that can indicate the presence of prostate cancer, which can be lifesaving if caught early enough. In short, a ten second checkup could save a life. This is one of the messages MUHC urologist Dr. Peter Chan is trying to get across to men ahead of the 10th annual Men’s Health Awareness Day Exam.

The free Public Men’s Health Exam includes a health questionnaire, blood pressure and cholesterol checks, and a prostate exam for men over the age of 40 and this year, men will have the option of making an appointment for a fertility exam. Interestingly, a low sperm count can often be easily treated.

Since launching the event in 2006, Dr. Chan and his team have examined over 1,500 men, one in five of whom have been contacted for follow-up consultations at the MUHC.

Open to men with a valid Quebec Medicare card
