Infamous medical research: Bad guys, duped victims or something else?

Susan M. Reverby, PhD
McLean Professor Emerita in the History of Ideas
Professor Emerita of Women’s and Gender Studies, Wellesley College

We often have difficulty figuring out how to think and talk about terrible medical research studies without resorting to melodramatic characters that include the demented/racist scientist and the hapless subject/victim. Drawing on two examples of some of the worst U.S. medical research studies I have written about and exposed, I will discuss how challenging it can be to move past this way of thinking so that we can really learn something from the past.

The public is cordially invited.
