It's time to table the Online Harms Bill | Toronto Star
November 30, 2023 | In the article by Taylor Owen and Emily Laidlaw, they talk about the Online Harms Bill and how Canada is late to introducing this Bill.Â
"We are late. Other democracies such as the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia have introduced legislation to safeguard citizens online."
The government has been engaged on this issue for the past two years and have conducted consultations with various groups ranging from citizen assemblies to panel experts from law and public policy. In summary, the legislation should require that platforms are responsible for the risks of harm of their services, from how their platforms are designed, to their advertising model, content moderation system and use of artificial intelligence.
Other democracies have introduced and passed the legislations, while Canada is yet to introduce its first online safety law.Â
