Title: Geometric connections between Artin groups and Artin monoids

(Joint work with Rachael Boyd, Ruth Charney and Sarah Rees)

Abstract: Artin groups are a generalization of braid groups, first defined by Tits in the 1960s. In their most general setting, very little is know about Artin groups. However many of the questions which are open for Artin groups can be easily answered for Artin monoids. This motivates the study of the connection between Artin groups and Artin monoids. In this talk, I will discuss two different geometric constructions including a CAT(0) cube complex and a version of the Cayley graph. These spaces illustrate the connection between the Artin monoid and group. I’ll introduce some properties of these spaces how they might lead to further results.

We are planning to have a group dinner with the speaker the evening after the seminar, shortly after tea time in the lounge (all are welcome). Please let us know if you would like to attend the group dinner, in case we need to make a reservation in advance.
