Professor Louise Boivin (Department of Industrial Relations, Universit茅 du Qu茅bec en Outaouais) is the author of听"Ch猫que services, normes du travail et libert茅 d'association: Le cas du Qu茅bec," the most recent addition to our Working Paper Series. Professor Boivin's paper explores the "cash-for-care" industry in Quebec - a听vast industry whose workers, predominantly women of colour, are called to render services such as听housekeeping, babysitting and personal assistance to elderly people or individuals with physical disabilities听- and paints a sobering picture of work, rights, and work-life balance for workers in this industry.听

In concluding her paper, Professor Boivin notes:听

芦 notre 茅tude de cas montre que la protection des droits du travail, reposant sur une conception fordiste, sexu茅e et racis茅e de l鈥檕rganisation de la production et du travail, n鈥檈st pas pleinement effective dans le secteur des services d鈥檃ide 脿 domicile, o霉 le lieu de travail est constitu茅 par le domicile et o霉 les relations de travail sont multipartites. Les travailleuses du ch猫que-emploi-service vivent les cons茅quences de cette protection ineffective des droits relatifs aux normes minimales du travail et de leur libert茅 d鈥檃ssociation. Elles connaissent une faible qualification professionnelle et une pr茅carisation de l鈥檈mploi qui se traduisent notamment par de tr猫s faibles salaires et une forte ins茅curit茅 茅conomique. Leurs horaires de travail 茅clat茅s, 脿 temps partiel et instables d茅coulent d鈥檜ne logique de flexibilisation du travail bas茅e sur l鈥檕bligation 脿 la 芦 disponibilit茅 permanente juste 脿 temps 禄.

About the author

Dr. Boivin is a professor in the Department of Industrial Relations at UQO, a member of the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT), of the R茅seau听qu茅b茅cois en 茅tudes f茅ministes (R脡QEF), as well as a member of the research group on Labour and Society (ERTS). Her primary research interests are in the areas of the sociology听of labour and trade unionism, critical theoretical approaches to industrial relations, globalization and work, service and care industries,听sexual and racial divisions of labour, state and enterprise transformations and their effects on work, employment and collective representation, and collective representation of marginalized social groups (such as women, racialized workers, migrants and undocumented workers).听
