About the Exhibition

British books both in English and in translation became increasingly common on the Continent in the years following 1750 and this continued to the end of the Napoleonic era. This early period has only been examined in a very cursory fashion. It was followed by the much better known one of the publications of contemporary works in English by both Galignani and Baudry in Paris and then later by Tauchnitz in Leipzig. Tauchnitz came to dominate the market beginning in 1841. This exhibition explores this early period through the lens of both publishers and authors to demonstrate its variety and extent.
