Lecture | Keep or Shred? How to get Businesses to Start Valuing their Archives
EveryoneÌýcan gain momentum by actively using their own history.
Companies are under no legal obligation to save their historical material. As private legal entities, they may do with their material as they please. At the same time, however, their history is a fundamental part of any society’s heritage. Corporations, whether large or small, local or multinational, have a major impact on how society is shaped. As a society, we want that history preserved and accessible for future generations. But how do we convince companies that they should invest in preserving historical materials – and that they should make those sources accessible to others?
In this presentation, Anders Sjöman will share thoughts and learnings from the Centre for Business History in Stockholm ().ÌýAs an outsourced archive solutionÌýfor Swedish companies, the Centre today hosts over 7000 company archives, dating back to the 1700s, and manage over 70000 shelf meters of materials. The CentreÌýover 40 years of experience in getting companies to both archive AND activate its historical material. Although the Centre focuses on business, the lessons learned are applicable to all archive and collection institutions.Ìý
Special exhibition and light reception to follow.
