Lecture | Books, builders, and bridges: Commemorating bridge construction in Montreal

Wednesday, February 19, 2020 17:30to19:00
McLennan Library Building Rare Books and Special Collections, 4th floor, Colgate Room, 3459 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 0C9, CA

To celebrate the Library’s current exhibition, Bridging the Nation: Bridge Design and History in Canada, Professor Heather Braiden will be speaking on “Books, builders, and bridges: Commemorating bridge construction in Montreal.” Commemorative books about the construction of Montreal’s bridges, such as the Victoria and Jacques Cartier bridges, acknowledge major contributors and help celebrate the completion of major infrastructure works. At first glance, they tell linear stories about the built environment. Extended consideration, however, reveals much about the authors, editors, and photographers who participated in building narratives about the city during the construction of the bridges. This talk explores the hidden relationships and meaning behind the books.

Heather Braiden is an assistant professor of landscape architecture at Dalhousie University and a Ph.D. candidate at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture at 㽶Ƶ.

The Bridging the Nation: Bridge Design and History in Canada exhibition can be viewed in the McLennan Library Building Lobby. It runs until April 27th.
