Alana Klein and Nandini Ramanujam to co-direct Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism
The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Alana Klein has been appointed co-director of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP). She began her three-year appointment on 1 July 2024, succeeding Professor Frédéric Mégret, who completed his term as co-director in June.
Professor Nandini Ramanujam was reappointed as co-director and program director for a three-year term, starting 1 July 2024.
A long-standing member of the CHRLP, Alana Klein specializes in health law, criminal law, and human rights. Her research examines the position of marginalized groups and individuals in decentralized and privatized systems and the role of accountability requirements in governance and decision-making.
Before joining the Faculty in 2007, she was a senior policy analyst with the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, where she worked on HIV/AIDS and immigration, legal and other barriers to harm-reduction programs for people who use illegal drugs, and law reform to promote the rights of women and girls in the context of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa.
Nandini Ramanujam has been co-director and director of programs for the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism since 2021. She directs the international human rights internship program, which each year enables dozens of students to work for tribunals and human rights organizations around the world. She is the McGill representative for the Scholars at Risk Network and served on the Steering Committee of the Scholars at Risk Network, Canada section, from 2016-22.
The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism is a vibrant hub for interdisciplinary research, dialogue, and collaboration. Established in 2005, it hosts a rich program of activities to advance research on human rights and the role of law in a legally plural world, including public lectures, research fellowships, and international student internships.
“I’m delighted that Professor Klein has stepped up to join the CHRLP leadership team and look forward to the energy and new ideas she will bring to the role,” said Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E. “I’m grateful to Professor Ramanujam for her continued sterling service, and to Professor Mégret for the excellent contributions made over his term.”
