Career Matters with Niem Huynh, PhD (Professional Life Coach): Asking what you really want to know and listening to the response (Graduate students and Postdocs)

This online workshop brought to you by the Desjardins Centre for Advanced Training of the Research Institute of the 㽶Ƶ Health Centre: We have online career development activities for graduate trainees going on now!

Someone asks you “What is the job market like in medical research because I heard that it’s really hard to get in….but then…”

It starts as a question but veers into an explanation or even an answer to the very question being asked! To the listener, it can be really confusing – are you asking a question (what is it?) or are you telling me something (what is it?).

How might this be important at a job interview or working with a mentor? Effective communication. It is an art to ask clear questions. It is also an art to listen to the answer. These go hand-in-hand in conversations that flow, whether at a networking event, job interview, or talking with colleagues.

In this online workshop, we dissect the elements of an effective question and apply theory to practice on the spot. We will also spend time learning to listen, really listen, to the answer. Why else would we ask a question, if we are not listening? (Yes, that is a question).

When: Thursday, April 16, 7 - 9 pm To register:

Where: Free Online workshop, registered participants will be sent the link.

Thisworkshop is intended forRI-MUHC trainees (undergrad, graduate, and postdocs). Non RI-MUHC trainees (graduate students and postdocs) are also welcome.
