Bridging Academia with the Media - How to Write and Publish an Opinion Piece (Op-Ed)

Wondering how to get your ideas and research out to the general public? Opinion pieces are a direct and effective way to reach a broad audience by bridging academia with the media. Combing opinion, critical thinking, and current events is a stimulating and meaningful way to disseminate graduate work, at any stage of your studies. If you have ever questioned how to engage with the media as an academic, this workshop is for you. Join us to learn about:Ìý

  • Choosing what to include in an opinion pieceÌý
  • Writing an opinion pieceÌý
  • Pitching an opinion piece to the mediaÌý

To get the most out of this workshop, come prepared with an idea and some notes (or a rough draft) that you would like to develop into a publishable opinion piece. No experience necessary.Ìý

This workshop will be held online on Thursday, July 15, 2021, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Registrants will receive the Zoom link in a confirmation e-mail.Ìý

This workshop will be led byÌýSusanÌýMintzberg, a PhD candidate in the School of Social Work at McGill. She contributes regularly to the media with numerous opinion pieces published in a variety of Canadian newspapers, including The Toronto Star, The Montreal Gazette, and La Presse, and radio interviews including on CBC The Current. In 2021, she was awarded the McGill Principal's Prize for Public Engagement through the Media.Ìý
