Dr. Rachel Ellaway
Professor of Medical Education in Community Health and Co-Director of the Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary
Title: Resistance in Health Professions Education

Abstract: Becoming a healthcare professional has long been a process marked by obedience and compliance with the systems and cultures of medicine. More recently, there has been a growing focus on resilience of trainees and practitioners to withstand the stressors of professional practice. Sometimes resilience is not the answer; sometimes injustice and ineptitude need to be challenged and resisted. However, despite its tacit presence, professional resistance has had little or no formal recognition within academic medicine. In this session, Dr. Ellaway will outline concepts of professional resistance and the ways in which they can and should be woven into the cultures of medicine.
