Research Interest

Dr. Mahmud's research endeavours fall under the broad spectrum of Arctic sea ice research in a warming climate. At McGill, he spearheads a collaborative, HQP-driven, field-based research program in the Arctic. He applies remote sensing and sea ice geophysical techniques for examining emergent atmosphere-sea ice-ocean properties and processes at critical scales. Dr. Mahmud seeks to understand how snow-covered sea ice in the Arctic changes in the new climate regime and how it affects critical snow/sea ice geophysical parameters retrieval. He leverages advanced remote sensing technologies, including low-frequency surface-based and satellite-based radar systems, and geostatistical and machine learning methodologies to investigate Arctic sea ice across local and pan-Arctic scales.
