GCI Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Check out our interview with PhD candidate Ipshita Nandi to learn about her ongoing breast cancer research in the lab of Dr. William Muller at the GCI.

My research explores the critical role of lipid metabolism in breast cancer. Fatty acid oxidation is vital process for breast cancer cells to acquire energy. Our studies using various mouse and human breast cancer models demonstrate that blocking this pathway induces stress, impairing growth of cancer cells. Targeting this pathway, in combination with a ketogenic diet can selectively impair the proliferation cancer cells while safeguarding normal cells. This approach, when combined with approved therapies, promises to transform breast cancer treatment. With our research, we hope to pioneer innovative therapies for patients with early-stage breast cancer and those which develop resistance to standard therapy.
