Job Posting: Longitudinal Family Medicine Experience (LFME) Assistant Course Director
Job Description
The expected time commitment is one half-day per week (0.1 FTE).
The Longitudinal Family Medicine Experience (LFME) Assistant Course Director is responsible for the Faculty Development of LFME Preceptors and collaborates with the LFME Course Director to ensure the overall organization, function, and quality of the medical student experience in the LFME Course. The Assistant Course Director collaborates with the LFME Course Director, LFME Course Director –Outaouais Campus, and LFME Physician Leads to ensure quality of teaching, type and quantity of clinical and academic activities, assessment of students, comparability of the educational experience for students at all training sites and physical and psychological safety of the learning environment. The LFME Assistant Course Director reports to the LFME Course Director.Â
General duties
The LFME Assistant Course Director collaborates with the LFME Course Director, LFME Course Director –Outaouais Campus, and LFME Physician Leads to implement MDCM Program Committee and FMD Committee decisions, through policies and procedures that ensure the quality of the educational experience in LFME and ensure that relevant accreditation standards are attained and maintained. The LFME Assistant Course Director collaborates with the Faculty Development Committee and the Department of Family Medicine to design and implement high-yield faculty development activities for LFME preceptors.
Specific duties
The LFME Assistant Course Director is expected to:
1. Participate in the Family Medicine Undergraduate Education Committee as per the terms ofreference of that committee
2. Collaborate with the Faculty Development Committee of the Faculty of Medicine
3. At the request of the LFME Course Director, function as his/her delegate to meetings andCommittees (e.g., FMD Committee)
4. Collaborate with the LFME Course Director to develop and maintain the academic content of theLFME Course in accordance with MDCM Program and FMD Component policies and procedures. This includes:
- Establishing course and session learning objectives
- Establishing the teaching and learning methods and activities, including clinical exposure,necessary to allow students to meet course and component objectives, which includes the development of alternative learning experiences for students who miss mandatory learning activities
- Establishing the course requirements and assessments that allow for assessment of student attainment of learning objectives, in accordance with MDCM Program requirements
- Collaborating with the MDCM Program Committee and its subcommittees in monitoring studentperformance and course performance and implement appropriate changes to course content orstructure as per the requirements of the MDCM Program Committee and the Program Evaluation and Curricular Outcomes (PECO) Subcommittee
5. Collaborate with the LFME Course Director and LFME Course Director – Outaouais Campus to implement the LFME Course in accordance with MDCM Program and FMD Component policies and procedures. This includes:
- Ensuring that relevant accreditation standards (e.g. equivalence of experiences across training sites and academic periods, required clinical encounters & procedures, midway feedback and narrative feedback, UGME Workload Policy, linking of learning activities and assessment to program objectives) are attained and maintained
- Developing and implementing the overall course schedule, including planning and scheduling clinical and academic course activities and recruiting preceptors
- Orienting students and teachers (residents and faculty) to course and session learning objectives, course structure, and assessment activities and ensure that the same key information is transmitted to all students at all training sites
- Coordinating, monitoring and participating in assessment activities. This includes timely correction of students reflective papers for the course
- Ensuring that the course section (e.g. course information, objectives, course requirements and assessment, etc.) posted on the online learning management system (myMDCM) meets UGME requirements, is easily accessible to students, teachers and administrators, and is accurate,comprehensive and up to date
- Collaborating with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs on issues related to student wellness,mistreatment and the learning environment
6. Communicate and collaborate with the LFME Course Director & Administrator, LFME Course Director – Outaouais Campus, LFME Physician Leads and LFME Preceptors and students regarding the LFME Course. Respond to email, phone and in-person queries
7. Contribute to longitudinal assessment within the MDCM Program, which includes submission andreview of exam items (e.g. for progress tests and OSCEs)
8. Plan and implement Faculty Development for LFME Preceptors. This includes:
- Identify faculty development needs
- Collaborate with the Faculty Development Committee and the Department of Family Medicine to develop and run faculty development events
- Collaborate with the Faculty Development Committee and the Department of Family Medicine to evaluate the effectiveness of LFME faculty development activities
