The McGill Department of Family Medicine presents “Cultural Safety and Intercultural Dialogue in Family Medicine" by Ivan Sarmiento (BSc, MPH) & Juan Pimentel (MD, MSc - Epidemiology)

Ivan Sarmiento and Juan Pimentel are Colombian PhD students and members of the Participatory Research at McGill (PRAM) ofÌýthe Department of Family Medicine. They share around two decades of work with indigenous communities in Colombia and Mexico, where they are active in development of methods addressing cultural safety, participatory indigenous health research and intercultural epidemiology. They see cultural diversity as a neglected resource in family medicine, and their PhD projects explore ways to leverage this for improved health service delivery. Their research explores how respect, dialogue, and listeningÌý to community voices can be part of medical training and delivery of primary health care. They argue that cultural safety is pivotal to increasing the impact and coverage of primary health care.
