Engaging with EDI Skepticism and Resistance

Tuesday, March 14, 2023 13:00to14:30

Advancing EDI goals in a large organization is a tough proposition. Those at the forefront of EDI efforts can feel challenged on all fronts. For some, EDI efforts are moving too far, too quick. For others, they fail to address meaningfully the historic and ongoing injustices within institutions of higher education.

Working within this space fraught with skepticism and resistance can be a challenge.

This workshop, open for staff and faculty, examines whether it is possible to embrace skepticism and resistance to EDI so as to enrich intellectual discussions on the topic and galvanize the energy needed to effect positive change in this realm.

It will examine:

  • Ways to identify, understand, and engage constructively with EDI skepticism and resistance,
  • How to harness the energy arising from critiques of EDI
  • Discern when resistance might generate individual or structural harm
  • Ways to address these issues
